Doggy Tax Break Coming Soon in 2010?

October 9th, 2009

A pet tax-exempt initiative has been put forth, and if passed, will allow animal owners to deduct as much as $3,500 from their 2010 tax returns for pet care expenses.  The bill is cited as the `Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years (HAPPY) Act’ spearheaded by actor/animal welfare activist Leo Grillo and Congressman Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI).

The findings by Congress to justify the bill:

(1) According to the 2007-2008 National Pet Owners Survey, 63 percent of United States households own a pet.

(2) The Human-Animal Bond has been shown to have positive effects upon people’s emotional and physical well-being.

A pet tax-exemption will also encourage owners to take better care of their animals, said Grillo. “Pet owners will have more discretionary income from which to do that, and we think there will be a demand for pets since they will be more affordable,” he added.

Brand believes if owners are able to receive tax relief, “more pets [will] get to remain in their loving closed quotationshomes and [not] wind up on the streets or in the already overburdened shelter system,” she said. Are dogs smarter than cats?

October 4th, 2009

A study out of Britain suggests that cats just don’t have the smarts like their canine counterparts.  A series of experiments testing the intelligence of domestic cats was used to determine their processes of thinking in terms of cause and effect relationships.

I would concur with the study that my intelligence greatly exceeds that of my felines counterpart

The experiments, conducted by Dr. Britta Osthaus at England’s Canterbury Christ Church University, tested the ability of the animals to get unreachable food from under a plastic screen.

“Dr Osthaus attached fish and biscuit treats to one end of a string and tested 15 domestic cats to find if they could understand that pulling on one end of the string would pull the treat closer.  She found that there was no evidence that cats understand the function of strings or their physical causality.”

Dr Osthaus said: “This finding is somehow surprising as cats regularly use their paws and claws to pull things towards them during play and hunting. They performed even worse than dogs, which can at least solve the parallel string task.”

'Pawsengers' welcome aboard

September 28th, 2009

We blogged earlier today about how human airlines such as Southwest and Jetblue are welcoming small dogs on board with their owners, but what about all the other dogs (medium, large, or slightly overweight small dogs) that want to travel?

Pet Airways launched a new airline service for animals (dogs and cats for now) in July.  Their motto, “A Pet Airline where pets fly in the main cabin, NOT in cargo!”, allows for animals to fly in a retrofitted plan allowing up to 50 kennels under the care of a veterinary technician.

Currently the service is only available in select cities (LA, Denver, DC, New York and Chicago) based on statistics of the most common destinations where owners travel with their pets.

The topic was posted in Yelp’s San Francisco talk section with mixed reviews.  One advocate wrote, “Its a wonderful and much overdue concept”, while others voiced a different sentiment: “Beginning of the end”, “Overly wasteful and a poor use of resources.  But then again, most of modern society is based upon wastefulness.  All I can do is laugh.”

It will be interesting to track the progress and adoption of this service, which beats putting your beloved dog in the dark and cramped corridors of the cargo.

Flying dogs

September 28th, 2009

This weekend, we had a brilliant idea on taking Obi to fly with us for a short airplane trip. It had come to our attention that pets are welcome aboard by airlines such as Southwest and JetBlue. We were pretty excited about it until we looked online and realized that there are plenty of rules and regulations that you must follow.

I won’t post the policy details here, if you would like to learn more … go here for Southwest’s pet policy and here for JetBlue’s

One of the rules from JetBlue states that a dog must fit inside a 17″L x 12.5″ W x 8″ H carrier and your pet must be able to stand up and move around the carrier with ease.

As much as we were excited to bring Obi on board with us, we’re not sure how he would feel about being stuffed inside a small crate. He is probably just a tad too big for a crate that size. It sounds to me that the airlines only allows small dogs that are under 11 lbs.

Would we bring Obi on board the airplane? Probably not right now
Why? Because his weight and size probably wouldn’t allow him to be comfortable inside the crate and we’re still unsure about how other passengers feel with dogs aboard.

Thoughts and comments on flying with your dogs are welcome

Twitter is full of Anipals!

September 26th, 2009

When we first started tweeting about Obi and his daily shenannigans, we had NO IDEA that there were so many dog lovers out there in twitter.  We were also surprised that there was a community of anipals (animals who have their own blogs or twitter accounts).  Anyways, here are some pictures of our anipals, who are kind enough to let us use their photo. Have a good weekend everyone!
